| May 2009 Raw Ramblings with Elyse Nuff Contents for May We Are Eating GMO'd Foods? GMO News Release Events Recipe We Are Eating GMO'd Foods? I feel it is no mistake that spring planting time is here once again and hot on its heels are the articles on GMO. Below is a copy of a press release received a couple of days ago. Just in time to convince most of us that planting our own gardens with seeds that will grow and seed(Heritage seeds) is really the way to go even if it is in containers on the deck or back porch. There are also opportunities to join community gardens now so I think we can all begin to grow our own produce for the summer and I am sure we will have lots of ideas come forth by fall in order to store them for winter use when it is chilly out. I see this as the most opportune time for us all to learn about gardening and set ourselves up with a plot or container of some kind. We do not want to be purchasing all the GMO'd products now in the marketplace. Any produce that is now seedless is GMO'd. Even local Organic Growers are now growing seedless produce as they claim that is all the public wants. Well, I have always known that whatever one puts in front of people to buy, they will buy without question because they believe that that is all that is available to them. The seller controls the market. It does not matter what the market is. If we are aware and see these products on the shelves where we shop the best thing to do is NOT BUY them. Just walking away and leaving them there. Soon we hope that the sellers will notice the drop in those sales and make a conservative effort to attract the produce that does have the seeds and the nutrition that our bodies need to have. Does the GMO'd products not only change the plants DNA,but also the consumers DNA? I believe it does. What goes your DNA look like? What does your childrens' DNA look like? Scary stuff. We need to start somewhere, when I cannot even buy an Organic English Cucumber with seeds anymore. That also includes local grown organics that is being sold to these stores. I refuse to buy this produce and also make the produce manager and store manager aware of the reason I am not purchasing that produce. You can do this as well. Put your suggestions in the suggestion box, saying "you cannot eat this produce that is seedless, please bring back the seeds in our produce." Talk it up. Discuss it with everyone becoming educated about the GMO situation in your local area and what the produce in your area is like. We as individuals are the consumers that buy this produce and keep them bringing it into the stores. We as individuals can control what we want to eat, if we get ourselves educated and DON'T BUY! If you cannot possibly grow your own garden then I would find a local organic farmer that still grows seeded produce. We are supporting the local farmers as well as feeding our bodies the best nutrition it can get and needs. Happy Growing! ******************* Press Release Dr Chopra stated that the removal of just 5 groups of products from the food supply, namely antibiotics, hormones, slaughterhouse waste, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and pesticides, would transform the safety and sustainability of the food supply. These products, claimed Dr Chopra, were hazardous, in most cases unnecessary and offered relatively few long-term benefits. Their use, he said, was driven less by need and more by the profit motives of major corporations. Dr Chopra, while evaluating on behalf of Health Canada virtually every red-hot topic in public health for a period of some 35 years, ranging from vaccines, to drugs and GMOs, had also been largely responsible for preventing the Canadian population’s exposure to recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) induced milk. He subsequently exposed corruption within Health Canada in his recent Canadian bestseller, ‘Corrupt to the Core: Memoirs of a Health Canada Whistleblower’ (KOS Publications, 2009). Dr Chopra’s cynicism over the ability of governments to regulate the food supply in the best interests of the public was clearly evident when he said, “People have to take charge of their destiny, they cannot any longer rely on government”. Shawn Buckley of Canada’s Natural Health Products Protection Association warned consumers that they should expect to lose up to 85% of natural health products presently in Canadian health stores over the coming years. These losses, he said, were a direct consequence of full implementation of the existing Natural Health Product Regulations (2004). However, he also made clear that if proposed consumer protection laws (Bill C-6) were passed by parliament, enforcement powers of Health Canada, together with restrictions on further products, could damage the natural products industry in Canada irrevocably. Mr Smith also warned that if governments, especially that of the USA, did not act quickly to ban the outdoor cultivation of GM crops, we would need to face serious and long term consequences caused by the unpredictable flow of modified genes into other organisms. Dr Shiv Chopra is the most recent appointee to the ANH's Expert Committee where his decades of experience as a government regulatory scientist—as well as his understanding of the way in which regulators are influenced against the public interest by the corporations—will be of great benefit to the ANH's wider campaign. EDITOR'S NOTES: The Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) is an international, non-governmental organisation, based in the UK. It was founded in 2002, and works on behalf of consumers, medical doctors, complementary health practitioners and health-product suppliers worldwide, to promote natural and sustainable health, using the principles of good science and good law. _ Dr Shiv Chopra_http://shivchopra.com/ June Event coming soon.
